Modesty and theodicy

How modest we need to be in using a word like ‘theodicy’! For the judgment that has befallen us, we who live east of Eden, is that we have been exiled. Our reconciliation has overcome our broken relationship with the Father, but it has not conferred on us vast powers of understanding into his governance of the world!

From us as sinners God has hidden himself, and his ways are ultimately know only by himself. God alone knows himself in the depths of his being. What we know is only what he has chosen to make known to us, and he has not chosen to make known much of his dealing with evil in the world or exactly how his purposes are ripening in the church that now seems so battered.
