Victorious over his enemies and ours
Throughout his ministry, Christ was God’s ‘No’ to the powers of sin and death. Healing the sick, casting out demons, and even raising the dead, Jesus provided morsels of that victory that would be consummated on the basis of his resurrection, his ascension, the sending of the Spirit at Pentecost, and Christ’s triumphant return in glory. Even at the cross Christ’s royal office is publicly displayed as he triumphs over the powers of this present age. Right where those powers can see him only as rejected, helpless, foolish, and weak, he is in fact accomplishing his most decisive victory over his enemies and ours.
